Verona, Italy: A City of Romance, History, and Hidden Gems

SAndy Colombo • October 9, 2025

Beyond the balcony of Juliet — explore Verona’s rich past, vibrant piazzas, and serene side streets.

Tucked in the northeastern corner of Italy, Verona  is often overshadowed by its more famous neighbours like Venice and Milan. But those who make their way to this charming city are rewarded with timeless beauty, rich history, and a romantic atmosphere that lingers long after

you leave.

Whether you're a lover of Shakespeare, Roman history, or simply wandering cobbled streets, Verona offers an unforgettable Italian experience — without the overwhelming crowds.

A Stroll Through Time: Verona’s Historic Core

Verona’s compact historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and for good reason. The city was an important Roman settlement, and remnants of that era are still visible today.

  • The Verona Arena, a colossal Roman amphitheater built in the 1st century, still hosts concerts and operas, making it one of the oldest functioning venues in the world.
  • Piazza delle Erbe, once the town’s Roman forum, is now a vibrant square surrounded by frescoed buildings, bustling cafes, and a colorful market.
  • Piazza dei Signori, with its elegant statues and quiet grandeur, offers a more refined charm just a few steps away.

Wandering through the alleyways of Verona feels like stepping into a living museum - one that seamlessly blends Roman, medieval, and Renaissance influences.

The Legend of Romeo and Juliet

Of course, Verona is famously the setting of Shakespeare’s  Romeo and Juliet. While the story is fictional, the city has embraced its literary legacy wholeheartedly.

  • Juliet’s House (Casa di Giulietta) is one of Verona’s most visited sites, complete with the famous balcony and a courtyard statue of Juliet. It's customary to touch her statue for good luck in love.
  • Juliet’s Tomb lies in a small crypt at the San Francesco al Corso Monastery — quiet, atmospheric, and far less crowded.

While some call it a tourist trap, others find romance in these spots. Either way, they’re part of what makes Verona uniquely Verona.

Beyond the Tourist Trail

Verona isn’t just about its famous landmarks. Some of its most magical moments happen off the beaten path.

  • Castel San Pietro offers panoramic views of the city, especially at sunset. It's a bit of a climb - or a funicular ride - but worth every step.
  • Giardino Giusti, a peaceful Renaissance garden across the river, is a serene spot to escape the crowds and admire perfectly manicured hedges and ancient cypress trees.
  • Borgo Trento and San Zeno are quieter neighbourhoods where you’ll find local cafes, authentic trattorias, and a glimpse of everyday Veronese life.

Eat and Drink Like a Local

Verona is in the Veneto region, known for its wine, risottos, and hearty meat dishes.

  • Try Risotto all’Amarone, made with the rich local Amarone wine.
  • Pastissada de caval, a horse meat stew, is a traditional (though niche) Veronese dish
  • for the adventurous eater.
  • Wash it all down with Valpolicella or Soave, two excellent regional wines.

Don’t miss the experience of a leisurely aperitivo  in the early evening - a spritz in hand, a plate of snacks on the table, and a view of a centuries-old piazza in front of you.

Verona as a Travel Base

Verona’s central location makes it a perfect base for exploring northern Italy. From here, you

can take easy day trips to:

  • Lake Garda – Italy’s largest lake, just 30 minutes away.
  • Venice – A 1-hour train ride.
  • The Valpolicella wine region – Ideal for vineyard hopping and wine tasting.
  • Dolomites – A scenic drive away for those craving mountain air.

Why Verona Deserves a Spot on Your Itinerary

Verona is a city that invites you to slow down. It doesn’t shout for your attention like some of Italy’s bigger cities; it gently whispers stories through its architecture, its food, and its way of life.

Whether you're a history buff, a hopeless romantic, or a curious traveller, Verona offers a rich and relaxing experience. It’s a place where past and present coexist beautifully - and where every corner holds a touch of la dolce vita
